The practical rule for spring: apply when soil at 2-inch depth reaches 50–52°F and the five-day trend is upward. That gives the product time to be watered in and settle before the 55°F germination threshold arrives. In fall, reverse the logic — apply as soil cools through the mid-70s, before it drops to 70°F.

The same threshold, very different dates

The 55°F spring trigger arrives in February along the Gulf Coast, mid-to-late March in the transition zone, and late April into May across the northern tier. For most homeowners, prodiamine is the default. It has the longest residual, is available as both granular and sprayable concentrate, is inexpensive per thousand square feet, and does not stain. Choose dithiopyr instead if you suspect you may be applying a week or two after the germination window opened, because it will still control crabgrass that has emerged but not yet tillered.

Mesotrione is the important exception to the seeding rule. It is labeled for application at the time of seeding for several cool-season species, which makes it the only practical pre-emergent option during a fall renovation. Verify your grass species appears on the label before using it.

Buying 'weed and feed' as a pre-emergent

Combination products lock the herbicide timing to the fertilizer timing. The correct pre-emergent date and the correct nitrogen date rarely coincide, and the fertilizer half often pushes growth at the wrong biological moment. Buy the two products separately and apply each on its own schedule.

  1. Measure the lawn. Multiply length by width for each mowed section and subtract beds, driveway, and house footprint. Every rate on every label is per 1,000 square feet, and guessing is the leading cause of both failure and turf injury.
  2. Complete any soil disturbance first. Core aerate, dethatch, level, or topdress before the application, never after — those operations physically break the barrier you are about to create.
  3. Check soil temperature. Insert a soil thermometer 2 inches deep in a sunny section, mid-morning, for three consecutive days. Apply when readings sit at 50–52°F and trend upward.

Warm-season lawns can be treated during dormancy

Dormant Bermuda and Zoysia tolerate pre-emergent applications well, and applying before green-up guarantees the barrier is in place before the soil reaches the crabgrass threshold. There is no reason to wait for the lawn to green up first.

  • Within 8–12 weeks before seeding or overseeding. The herbicide does not distinguish grass seed from weed seed. Check your product label for its specific interval; prodiamine's is the longest.
